Communication Tower Totem
Type of Totem:
Civic Totem
Target Species:
White-bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster)
Location:
East Cost Park Communication Tower, Singapore
Story:
At the end of the East Coast park this new communication tower has had 2 nests built only to be cleared away by maintenance. There’s a real need for civic totems to provide nesting spots for raptors. We are proposing such towers could be placed in parks where they would prevent disruption to communications.
We can get some totem design clues from this instance: Raptors like a tall commanding location with 360 deg views, they don’t mind artificial structures, they choose a part where there is some stick-scaled framing to kick start their nest, and they don’t mind the colour red!
Here is an idea to increase habitat as well as preventing bird stress - rather than removing nests on communication towers we can provide a bolt-on raptor totem that keeps the nest out of the communication gear, protects the birds and shields the technicians. A win-win situation that’s about living with nature rather than fighting it.
